windows explorer

I have windows 2000 professional, int explorer 6. Hello
and my question is, do I need windows explorer and what
role does it plays to my system. If I dont need it at
start up or really out front. How do I get it off the
front burn (meaning put it somewhere on my computer where
it wont start up or be used unless I need it). Please
explain it to me in elementary terms, please.

In elementary terms explorer.exe is your desktop.
