Windows Explorer Strangeness

I just reinstalled XP Home, everything went well all updates and security
patches, yadda yadda yadda.

However when opening Windows Explorer to see all file, folders, hard drives,
CD-Roms etc, etc.....the pane on the Left-hand side shows the names of the
folders and the drives, but there are no icons! The right-hand side pane
shows everything as fine both folders and files show up normally. It's just
the right-hand side.....no icons whatsoever. If I go into the Folder
Options under View, the only adjustment that I can seem to make is whether
or not to display Simple Folder View which merely draws lines between drives
and folders showing relationships. Does anyone have an idea of what has
caused this and more importantly how to correct it.

Thanks in advance.
