Windows Explorer Start Navigation Sound

Hello.

While my computer sits idle, I periodically will hear the Windows Explorer
Start Navigation Sound -- the one that sounds like I've clicked the mouse.
It happens even though no one is even near the computer, and no programs are
running.

What is happening? Do I have a security problem?

Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Device, Sounds, Windows Explorer, Start
Navigation.
Adjust from there.

Thanks, but that's not my problem. I know how to assign sounds. Can I make
other adjustments there?

My problem is that my computer makes the mouse click noise for no apparent
reason -- when it is completely idle (i.e. no one is using it or running any
applications, other than what runs in the background). It's as if someone
has clicked through a Windows menu. It even happens when nothing is
happening on the screen, and no one is sitting at the computer. Any guesses
on what's causing it? Is there any way for me to trace the activity that
causes it?

Thanks!

Select 'None' under Sounds scheme.

The noise itself doesn't bother me. Does the fact that it occurs randomly
indicate a possible problem or corruption?

I think you're on to something with the alien thing.

No, it's my home desktop. I've checked sounds via the Control Panel, and
Start Navigation is the only activity that has been assigned this sound. I
tried changing the Start Navigation sound to something else, and sure enough,
the new sound was randomly played while my computer was idle.

Thanks for the link -- I'll check it out anyway.

Now that is strange, maybe you can set auditing on that file and see what's touching it.
