Windows Explorer "standard buttons" icons gone

For whatever reason, the buttons on Windows Explorer's "standard
buttons" toolbar are gone. There is only text left in it's place.
However, if I reinstall IE6 they come back... until the computer
reboots (after the initial reboot to install ie6)

Turning the toolbar on and off does nothing to change the problem.
Changing the icon size does nothing. And I have no idea why this even
started. I have scanned the computer for any virus with SAV and
found nothing. While this doesn't preclude the possibility of
infection (I do have a proxy server on the line that is working fine,
and only my computer seems to be affected) I am at a loss to see where
to go next.

Reset the toolbar settings in the registry by downloading and running this
script:

I just downloaded and confirmed the file is not empty.
These are the contents of the file.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar]

So, if you are dare enuf to deal with registry, delete the above entry in
registry manually.

Try running this little program:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/ToolbarRepair.Exe
This little app should repair the registry entries that have become fouled up.

If no joy, then I would suspect spyware malware -

Use Ad-Aware or Spybot Search & Destroy to remove it.

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Spybot: http://security.kolla.de/
(Good site on how to install and use Spybot - http://www.tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/)

More information here:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/Darnit.htm
http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ - runs a little script when loading page to check for common parasites

If no joy, in IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, Browsing section, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions", click Apply, click Okay, reboot. If that solves your problem, then more troubleshooting is needed to find out exactly which program, or Browser Helper Object (BHO) is causing this problem. You don't want to leave it at that, as some BHOs are useful or necessary - like Adobe Acrobat for reading .pdf files or an essential component of Norton AV. Get BHODemon - http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm - read all about BHOs. Disable all items, and then gradually replace one or two at a time to narrow down the culprit.

Tried them all.. no joy. Guess it's time to nuke and start fresh
again <grin>
Funny part is, the icons are there for IE... just not for Windows
Explorer. Same damned icons too... *chuckle*
