Windows Explorer slow to respond

This is on a system running Windows XP SP2, an Intel D820 CPU and 1GB of
RAM.

If I have had CDs or DVDs in the drive, Windows Explorer continues to
display the disc name and associated icon after the disc has been
removed. Clicking refresh doesn't help. The only way to refresh the
display is to insert another disc or re-boot.

I also have a Seagate 300GB external USB backup drive. When I connect
this drive, I get the appropriate beep within a couple of seconds,
indicating the system "sees" the drive. But if I start a Windows
Explorer, it takes several *Minutes* for the window to open and display
the external drive contents. If I already have an explorer window open
when I connect the external drive, it also takes several minutes to
display it. When I remove the external drive, explorer does correctly
show this almost instantly.

Suggestions on how to troubleshoot/correct these issues would be much
appreciated. Thanks!

might be indexing the external drive.
maybe setting the indexing service to
the opposite state that it is now might
help then reboot....
