windows explorer setting

Does anyone know how to change the setting in windows explorer so that I
can see the folders view on the left side? From my PC when I click on
the folders icon in the toolbar I can remove or add the folders view.
From a 2000 professional server when I do that I get a gray box on the
left. How do I get the folders to come up on the left pane?
