Windows Explorer runs really slow

I have been having a problem with Windows Explorer. If I
open MyDocuments, it comes up fine. But if I try to go
higher, say to my entire c: drive, it shows a flashlight
moving in a circle for several minutes. Eventually it
will display what I asked for, but it takes several
minutes (I am not exaggerating.)

I will do the same thing if I am in a program and choose
file/save and try to go to anything but MyDocuments.

Can anyone help me solve this problem?

Thanks!

This will happen if one of your CD drives is dying. If
you drill down with explorer (after it *finally* opens)
into the C: drive, it is probably pretty fast. When you
drill down into a disk in the defective drive - or one on
the same IDE cable! - it will take forever or will say it
is not accessible. When you choose My Documents, explorer
doesn't try to look anywhere else.

Unplugging the IDE/ATA cable from all your CD drives is
the definitive test. I assume your hard drive is at least
not a slave.
