Windows Explorer not installed

I had some difficulties installing XP, but thought I had them fixed. For some
reason, during the install it would lose where the CD drive was. A dialog
would pop up asking for the path to some file 'smc' something. I would browse
around for the CD but it wasn't in the list! So rather than 'box with the
wind' I copied the entire CD onto the hard drive. It would boot up if I kept
canceling the dialog boxes when they popped up, it's just that a lot of the
components were missing.

That worked flawlessly, or so I thought. It appears the installation is fine
except for one thing. There is no Windows Explorer! There may be others that
I am missing, but it does 'look' good, except for windows explorer.

I can see a explorer.ex_ and a explorer.sc_ in the i386 folder. I'm sure
this is what i need. Anyone know how I can install it from these files?

Thanks very much,

Thanks very much Colin. That is some esoteric command.
Evidently there were other system files than just windows explorer missing.
But it didn't load windows explorer.
I'm not sure exactly what it did load. It just asked for the CD, so I assume
it loaded something.

Explorer is embedded in the OS and there are many files involved. Is it
working now?

No, it's not working yet.

Thanks very much Colin for your very determined attempts to help.
I'm reluctant to try the suggestion on the article you mention cause it said
I would have to reinstall all updates. That scared me away. They took a long
time to install.

From something you said earlier, i.e., that explorer was embedded in the OS
I thought I would try Start->Run->Explorer and sure enough it popped up. So
it's there I just have to figure out how to put a link in my start menu. Any
ideas?

Thanks,
Eagle Eye

Start>All Programs>Accessories, right click on Windows Explorer and choose
Pin to Start Menu.
