windows explorer - network drives problem

Hi All!

I just installed a clean win2000pro installation on a new pc, and everything
works fine, but these two things:

1.) - network drives
2.) - offline files

1.) network drives:
=============
Log on script is something as follows:
net use X: \\ntserver\FILES /persistent:N
net use Y: \\ntserver\SYS$ /persistent:N

In fact, everything works fine, but one thing: normally when I open windows
explorer and look at those drives, I can see the red crosses over them, and
first two or three times I try to open them, I get the error "X is not
available - Network path not found" (this is my free translation from
Danish). After those two/three times it begins to open, and the crosses
disappear.
But sometimes when I open windows explorer, everything looks/works fine.

I tried with "persistent:Y" in logon script - but it didn't help. (the
server is NT 4.0 sp6)
I also tried with different network settings (we have DHCP, and other
clients are working just fine), but no help either.

What could be the problem?

2.) offline files:
===========
I think that this one is related to the 1.) problem. Although I marked some
files to be offline, and I can see that they are being synchronized at
logon/logoff, when I am offline, I cannot access the files. The wonder-thing
is that they are shown under "offline files", but when I click on any of
them trying to open it, it says that "network path is not found" or
something like that. And sometimes at logoff synchronizing it says that
files cannot be accessed...

What could be the trick? I must say that on all other PCs the same thing
with the logon script works fine! Could it be hardware/networking? But I
cannot see any problems in Event Viewer or other places...

Thanx in advance!

Regards,
Zoran

Hello Zoran,
Try uninstalling any Antivirus and/or Backup software on the
machine...reboot and check the drives again.

Thanks...

Hi Rick!

Thanx for your answer!

I have McAfee antivirus (running constantly) and Swoosie backup (installed,
but not running as a service, just when I start it, and that is once in two
days).

Now I uninstalled both, and the change I can see is that now the network
drives are having red crosses constantly, but I can see the contents of
drives the whole time.

I had to install McAfee back, and it is the same as above. So now I'll keep
it running like that for some time to see what is happening, and then I'll
get back here with the result.

I am not going to install Swoosie backup again before I get the results of
uninstalling and installing antivirus.
(I have Swoosie running on my machines for several years, and there were no
problems with it).

It does the same...(

There are red crosses over the network drives, and it gives error first two
or three times I try to see the contents of the drives. After that it works
fine, and the crosses are away.

Sometimes, when I log off and synchronizing starts, it says "Cannot open
more connections at the time - there are already all connections to the
logon server..." or something like that (I am again translating it from
Danish).

Could it be something on the server? (domain controller, NT4 sp6)

One more thing I just saw: when I put a data CD into CD drive, and browse
the contents, everything works fine.

Then I take that CD out, and put in another data CD. Again no problems
browsing the contents, but Windows Explorer is showing the previous CD's
name as the name for the new CD...? And I cannot update it, no help pressing
F5 nor starting the Windows Explorer again.

Could this problem be related with this network drives problem, and is there
a solution for it?

Hmmm, no, it is definitely not Swoosie - offline files doesn't work
either... And I don't think that McAfee is the cause, since it works with
the same settings on the other machines...

Zoran
