I don't know about you but I find this new Windows explorer a real pain in
the but. Not only am I use to the XP version but it is far better than what
there is now. Does anyone know if WE can be changed to look like XP Windows
Ex or is there a program that one can use in place of it ( assuming that it
would work on Vista 64 )?
So far, this and Nero are the only complaints I have about Vista.

Can you tell us why you think XP's Explorer is far better then what
there is now?

Sorry for taking over your post, but the two things that I don't like about
Windows Explorer are as follows:

1) I can't get rid of the 'Favorite Links' on the top left hand column.

2) There is no 'Up' button to go up through the folders. Instead you have
to go back through the address bar.

Hi Dave,

That's pretty simple mate.
Whenever I go into WE naturally you get the whole directory tree on the left
panel ( nothing wrong with that ) Now I have one drive full of music and say
I want to play something. Once I select the songs to play I hit the back
arrow to go back to the previous window and it always puts me back to My
Documents ( but I don't want to go there ) If you click on the address bar
all it shows you is the sites you might have looked at on the net. Now if
when going into my music drive it gave me another panel and all I had to do
was close it to get back to the tree directory that would be alright but it
doesn't do that.

1) Right click Start Orb > Properties > Start Menu tab, Customize, uncheck
Favorites menu in top pane list

2) I like the new way of just clicking on the directory you want to go to in the
address bar. Going back 3 or 4 levels is now just one click instead of 3 or 4
clicks.

Just lock on to the top of the folder bar and drag it up over the
Favorite Links pane - Simple

2) There is no 'Up' button to go up through the folders. Instead
you have to go back through the address bar.

Just click the folders in the folder pane....if you notice the folder
pane will expand as you navigate so you can very easly progress back up
through the folder list.

Can I add that I think it's a pain in the butt [bum] as well? No
customization of the toolbar to add Move To, Copy To, Delete, Properties,
Undo etc. I've been encouraging folk, particularly older/elderly to use
Move To and Copy to instead of clicking and dragging so they can choose
exactly where they want to shift files to and not dump them in the wrong
folder by mistake......all gone....who's brilliant idea was that?

It isn't gone, it is modified. Big deal. Click on Edit, you have both
copy to and move to plus move to folder and copy to folder. Maybe the
teacher needs to be retrained?

Drag and drop now also sports a helpful tag that shows which folder
the files is getting moved to when you hover over the intended target.

Cheers for your post Dave, but all this does is minimize the 'folders'
section to the bottom. The 'Favorite Links' stays put.

Cheers for your post Cal, but I am using the 'Classic Start menu' and this
option isn't present (there is 'display favorites', but this is unchecked).
I did temporarily select the normal start menu, but the 'favorites menu' is
already unticked.

I think you grabbed the wrong bar, at the bottom.
Grab the horizontal line above the word Folders.. you should get the
vertical doubles arrows cursor, and move that line upwards.
If you click on the V arrow, then it minimizes the folders section

different Dave

Perfect! Worked a treat.

Cheers Dave.

From Organize > Layout you can get rid of the navigation pane altogether.

I can tell you what i dont like about Vista Explorer.
All of my column headers in explorer detail view are gone. By column headers
i mean, 'size, type, mod date, owner, etc...'
I can sort by these fields by right clicking and choosing sort by, but this
sucks compared to having the column headers.

Also i have lost the ability to multi-select from any folder except my
desktop.
By this is mean, if i have a folder open in exploer, i should be able to
drag a box around several files, right?

Nope, Vista has taken this from me.
I am seriously considering going back to XP because of this. It makes
working with files impossible. I have to go to DOS to move multiple files
like *.exe.
GRRRRRR Its irritating to say the least.

WTF are you talking about? I have column headers - Name, Date
Modified, Type, Size. I can still drag a box around several files.

You can configure Explorer to show whatever columns you want...

Either change the folder template by -
right-click on an open area of the right pane, and select "customize this
folder",
and choose "All items"

or, right-click on the Name heading, and select "More..."

Ok,

So i open up my computer. Vista x64 bit Ultimate edition.

In the right hand side i have a list of drives and no column headers
including "name, size, date, etc."
If i right click in the white space, i have no "customize this folder"

If i move to another folder, like c:\
I have no column headers either. And again, i have no "customize this
folder" option.

If i go to c:\windows
I have no column headers
I cannot muti-select anything and all files in all subfolders are displayed
as if they were media files. They all have a star rating system as if
explorer were itunes or as if i ever wanted media rating at all, nevermind
this is my c:\windows folder.

If i go to c:\users i have column headers like name, date modified, type,
etc..
If i right click whitespace in the right pane of c:\users i have ''customize
this folder'

This folder looks normal or should i say 'as i want every single folder i
look at to look like'. I do not want these template views at all.
I want simple detail view with column headers for every single folder.
Local, remote, system files, music files, whatever.

You should put a paper bag over your head. No doubt it would improve
your appearance.

Here's a thought for you to ponder. Anytime any of your Bozo fanboys
insult somebody I'll insult you. We both know I can do it way better.
So your choice. If you must continue to be an ass, I'm all too happy
to kick you in your ass.

You're stinkin drunk again aren't you?
Sober up, wise up and STFU...hehehe...that's a lot of "up's"!

The View menu set how you view. I have all the columns Name,
Modified,Type,Folder,Authors, Tags and could have more by just clicking the
many options. This is a learning experience in a new environment not XP.
