All above mentioned will not work. When explorer run, desktop icons disappear for a moment, system tray icons disappear, start button and task bar disappear and nothing happens. No open window to view files or anything. No error messages. All work in safe mode just fine. Suspect virus but the scanner cannot find one. Reloaded windows to no avail. Ran sys file checker to no avail.

Hi Randy,

I am havy the same exact problem. I have posted my
question as "frustrated" and as "Sandra" on the
Accessibility newsgroup and as Sandra on the General
Newsgroup.
I'll post it to you if I get a response.
The only difference with me is that I do get an error
message, but the behavior is the same.

I received this message to the identical problem but have not tested it yet so no guarantee. I can't wait to get home to see whether it works

Here is what worked for me

I downloaded toolbar cop at <http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/toolbarcop.htm>
Ran the program
Deleted all the BHO's

Everything works correctly again

do you have quicktime after you reformated the system?then
uncheck the 'tiff' in quicktime but it may be too late.
also could be a driver problem if you can run in safe mode.

Just ran ad-aware 6.0 and found 98 suspect items of different origin and catagories. I deleted them all, and found that my problem went away. I rebooted the computer and tested again. The problem has been solved. I don't know which of the 98 items was the culprit but obviously one was. I am now able to use the explorer, my computer, control panel, IE, everything that didn't work before. Hope you get this and hope it helps.

I just came from an appointment where the customer had 3 teens in the
house. Had over
400 spyware files running.

I ran Ad-Ware and Norton. I removed all that Ad-Ware
found. Also, no viruses found with up-to-date virus
definition.

I still can't get into Control Panel, Internet Explorer
or do searches.

Any other suggestions?

Download ToolbarCop and inspect the BHO section
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/toolbarcop.htm
Double-click each BHO and it copies the CLSID to clipboard. Post all the CLSIDs listed there. Don't delete them yet.

since you are getting an error message, i believe that
your problem is not related. have you tried to restore or
reinstall or perform the system file checker (run: sfc).
have you installed any new programs?

Thanks to all your help. What finally solved the problem
was downloading toolbarcop and checking each BHO (Browser
Helper Object) against a list of BHOs. I deleted all the
bad BHOs. I downloaded Tool Bar Cop from:

http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/toolbarcop.htm

Thanks so much!
