Windows Explorer hogging memory

Anyone know why Windows Explorer sometimes and for no
apparent reason decides it needs an extra 800MB or so of
memory?

Selecting multiple files often triggers this problem, but
sometimes it happens without anything being selected --
just when scrolling up and down the directory.

Since I have only 256MB on my PC, its demand for memory
makes my machine very sluggish for several minutes at a
time. Very annoying!

There are no known viruses on my machine and I keep
Windows XP updated.

Thanks!

Spyware? Too many processes? Too many programs running in the
background?
