While having fun tweaking the registry for custom operation I somehow turned
off the 'Find' function in Windows Explorer. Can anyone out there help me get
it turned back on short of reinstalling XP?

Hi

Try a System Restore back to a point before you altered the Registry.

Thanks Will. It's didn't help but not because of your advice; it was due to my stupidity. I had System Restore turned off. BOOoooo

Try reinstalling Search. First make sure that you can see all hidden files
and extensions (View tab in Folder Options). In XP, there are four
checkboxes to deal with:

a. Check "Display the contents of system folders".
b. Check "Show hidden files and folders".
c. Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".
d. Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and click "OK" to the
dialog box.

Now look in the hidden Windows\inf folder for the srchasst.inf file,
right-click and take Install.

If you need more details/help, go to MVP Kelly Theriot's site here:

Choose "S" and scroll down to the Search section.

Thanks for the tip Malke. The reinstall couldn't find several files, and it
told me to insert the SP 2 disk. I installed SP 2 online so I had no disk. I
searched the c:\ drive for the files it wanted, found them, then reinstall
worked. The problem remains. I have the freeware program InfoRapid Search and
Replace installed, so I can use that in place of Explorer search. It works
fine. I'm tired of fussin' with this problem. Let's consider the matter
closed. Thanks for your help. Your explanation was very complete and easy to
follow.
