i've been trying to view a set of videos that i have downloaded and put into
the "my videos" folder in the "my documents" folder. i don't even get around
to opening any one of the videos when it gives me the "Windows Explorer has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." message, and i either have to click "send error report" or
"don't send". this has become an extreme hassle, and all i want to do is view
my videos. if anyone can help me it'd be really appreciated; i don't want to
have to spend 35 bucks to even talk to someone.

Hi, miss50sretro.

Can you play other videos on your computer? If so, then these may be
corrupted. You might try downloading them again.

Can you play these videos on a different WinXP computer? If so, then your
WinXP may be damaged or corrupted. Windows Explorer is such an integral
part of WinXP that it can't easily be dealt with separately.

Have you run the System File Checker? At the Run prompt, type: sfc
/scannow

SFC will compare each operating system file with the "known good" copy held
in your on-disk cache and replace any missing or damaged ones. Have your
WinXP CD-ROM handy; SFC probably will want to see that.

If that doesn't work, you may need to completely reinstall WinXP - but
preserve all your installed applications and data. For instructions on how
to do this "in-place upgrade", see the official instructions from Microsoft
or the explanation by MVP Michael Stevens of the same procedure:

If you need help with this, please post back.

If the problem appears to be limited to only folders with those videos
in it and you don't have the problem with Windows Explorer in other
folders, viewing the Recycle Bin still lets you select a single
file, Start->Search still lets your find a file, the Control Panel
still lets you select an item, other folder shortcuts still work,
right clicks on items in these don't crash it or take forever to
respond, etc. then you likely have a problem that has been described
recently where Windows Explorer "has issues" with video files. Go
to www.google.com and into the Groups search and into Advanced
Search and use this group name along with Explorer and video and
maybe avi and things like that, limit the search to the last three
months. You should find a handful of folks with the same problem
and a few of them seeem to have found a solution.

If, on the other hand, all those other examples of Explorer don't
work either then you are one of 200 who have found this problem and
thus far there doesn't seem to be a solution. I just finished
another two hours of web chat with Microsoft support and we got to
the point where he concluded he didn't know enough to fix this and
escalated the problem. If you have this form of the problem I can
post my accumulated info on this problem and you can try each of
the things, but almost nobody finds that any one of them work. But
that is all the things people have claimed will fix it.

Something you could try in the mean time, irfanview is a small fast
free reliable viewer for almost any picture or video. Grab a copy
off the web and see if that will let you see the videos. Then you
can fight Explorer after you know the videos work.
