OK,
I've found the procedure for changing the target directory
of Windows Explorer in the microsoft support site. It
works fine provided you go to start/programs/accessories/
explorer. Who actually does that? I open windows explorer
by right clicking the start button. Unfortunately the
procedure posted by microsoft doesn't appear to work when
opening explorer this way. All the time I save by opening
to my preferred directory is lost because I have to scroll
through the menus to open the program. Does anyone know
how I can adjust the startup directory of Windows explorer
when opening it by right clicking the start button?

You can make any short cut go to where you want it to on opening.
Post where you want it to open to and I will post what to place in the Target box for you, if
you like.
