"windows explorer" and "internet explorer" very slow.

hey there, my "windows explorer" and "internet explorer"
are running extremely slow. i usually need to hit refresh
or actually re-click the link (in browser) or the icons (on
desktop, windows explorer, etc.) to get it going. again,
this is for both my internet browser "internet explorer"
and the windows explorer itself, i.e. "my computer, etc.".
so yeah, basically its my windows.

now i dont think its a slow processor (toshiba satellite
laptop, 1096 mhz and 511mb)... plus my other programs and
games run just fine considering the current power of the
computer.

i have windows xp (updated to today, i believe) and
internet explorer 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633, if all
that extra crap means anything to ya.

to help speed up my whole internet browsing experience, i
said eff it and use netscape for the time being.

any help, ideas, or suggestions are appreciated, thanks!
