windows explorer and ie

everytime i go 2 turn on/off my windows xp firewall it
comes up windows explorer has encountered a problem and
needs 2 close i try safe mode and the same problem
accours.
also every now and again i close internet explorer and it
says pure virtual call? what is this meaning?
help is much appreciated
