Look at TrackerV3's (http://www.trackerv3.com/) "report" functions. It's
exactly what you need, and it's free for private non-commercial home use.

Total Commander will do the: see my very recent posting to the thread
"Re: Windows Explorer Freeware??".

It doesn't do it "out of the box": you must add a button to the toolbar,
which takes a few seconds (see the FAQ supplied with TC). It will then
copy a list of selected file and subdirectory names to the Windows
clipboard.

BTW, this is a TC facility that I didn't know about: your posting
prompted me to check (TC can do most things), and I discovered this
feature. Thanks!

ExplorerPlus
http://www.sendphotos.com/Products/ExplorerPlus/Features.aspx
will do it, but I would prefer a freeware solution if poss.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers,

Highlight the files you want to copy names for, then click Edit, Copy Names
or Copy Columns.

I didn't know about this one. Been playing with it since yesterday and it
seems to be one of those programs that you play with and then a while
later find that you are just using regularly. It's a keeper, and that's
more than I can say about other free file managers I have tried on Windows.

Windows Explorer is my favorite for this chore.

Simply highlight the files and/or folders, right click, sendto, "Clipboard
as Name". Paste into any editor.

I keep looking for a "Better Explorer" myself. Right now, one doesn't seem
to exist. I can find one with a trick or 2 that Explorer doesn't have, but
they omit too many functions that Explorer does have.

This sounds excellent:
"Since version 3.21 you may export extended file informations of
whole directories (or even directory trees) to CSV-formatted
files. "

Will it do this with *only* the filenames (ie: without the
paths)?

Cheers.

Except, to do this one is required to install a shell 'tweak'
like this one:
http://www.petri.co.il/shell_enhancements_and_other_tweaks_for_windows_xp_2000_2003.htm

Then it it pastes in the full path instead of the filename. Also,
when pasting into Excel, it slaps all the text in one cell which
is no good to me.

So far, the only one I've found which will copy just filenames,
is http://www.sendphotos.com/Products/ExplorerPlus/Features.aspx
"Copy the file name or its full path to the clipboard." It also
pastes groups of filenames into individual cells in Excel, but of
course, it isn't freeware.

PS: TrackerV3's context menu for files gives you all the options: copy
path/file name(s), copy file name(s) (without path), or copy path name(s)
(without file) to clipboard.

For a Windows Explorer Send To system menu solution:

Send To Toys http://www.gabrieleponti.com/software/index.html
One of the toys: Send To "Clipboard (as name)"
This copies the name of the file or files to the clipboard.
Hold down the CTRL key to change the settings for this extension.

I recommended Send To Toys because I use it myself (and I have recommended
it before).
It's only when I just now followed the above link that I see that you were
referring to the same thing :)

But did you have a good look at it?
You can hold down the CTRL key to change the settings.
The change will be remembered for the next use.
It does let you optionally copy the filenames only.
It also does let you optionally keep filenames on seperate lines.
I don't use (Excel) spreadsheets, so I don't know if that helps.

From their website: "File names and paths can be copied into the
Clipboard"

Can they be copied without the paths?

Yes - I just did it - the choices are full file path for selected
files, just the names, or just the path.

It is pretty powerful freeware and even handles ZIP files like folders.
