I have a 2.6 reading for base score video card (2.6) all other are at least
4.0. I have 2 gigs of ram and 256 on video card. I understand that anything
under 3.0 will not run aero. How can I tell if I am running aero?

I think the easiest way to tell is to look at the start bar.
Aero basic (thats for people who cannot get aero) has a black start bar and
the colour cannot be changed.
Full aero has different colours, is glassy, transparent in places.

If you think you should get aero but do not, then check for updated drivers
on the manufacturers website. You are looking for WDDM drivers, these are
aero enabled.

If your close icon is the size of your maximize and minimize buttons in the
corner of every window then you're running Aero. If you close icon is the
same size as the maximize or minimize buttons you're running the basic
theme.

Aero may run on lower cards, the system will try it out, if it starts
getting performance issues it turns it off. I can usually get it running ok
on a GeForce Go 5200 (which scores 1.0) at 1400x1050 resolution if I only
have a couple of windows open.

This does not make sense

For me it just comes up as an option in Windows Color and Appearance ->
Advanced. Windows Aero is listed along with Basic, Standard etc.

However once the system has worked out that it is too slow (like when I open
lots of windows) it removes it from the list until the next reboot.

My graphics chip (integrated intel) has all the requirements for Aero,
except Intel will not make a WDDM driver for it. Its a shame as there were
many many laptops built last year with this chip and with such new machines
people cannot run the aero. Its a shame and I am annoyed at Intel but its
not a devastation. Just shit happens
