windows event log won't start

K

keepout

error 4201: The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMIdata
provider.

Anyone care to translate this ?
I can probably get along without the logs, but I can't troubleshoot anything
using the logs.
This was the error I got when I tried to start it.
When I tried to view the history of the dshield task, it says, 'This operation
requires event log service. Verify that this service is running.

I also noticed other odd things going wrong yesterday. The tray icons were
disappearing. I don't have the hide icons thing on.

Then when quitting for the day, closed IE7, and it kept telling me IE7 failed,
and once it tried to restart, and did. The 2nd time after I quit, I just
cancelled letting it restart.
And before that, It took an extremely long time to take a NEW TAB, and open the
SAME page by cut & paste the URL from the other window to the NEW TAB.

Before that, I installed Dshield. It won't install or run with UAC on. I turned
off UAC, it ran fine. Turned UAC back on to see if now that it was installed,
if the task scheduler could run it with UAC on.
Far as I can see, it doesn't run in any way shape or form with UAC on.
UAC is now off, dshield won't run, task scheduler is reporting alls well with
it running. It was reporting that even with UAC on. so that report is notto be
trusted. All it's really saying is it told the program to run, and washedit's
hands of it. Didn't care if it ran or not. It reported it ran and passed.

Can't check for errors in the event log, since it won't run..

Anyone know why ?

What happens if you uninstall Dshield? As far as I can determine, Dshield
is not compatible with Vista. The latest Windows client dates from 2003.
