windows error recovery screen

bought my son a laptop with vista home basic pre-installed. It's worked fine
for a couple of months.

Now when you switch on, you only get as far as the windows error recovery
screen. selecting the first option to 'launch startup repair' only gives a
blank screen for a split second, the other option to start windows normally
only reboots and brings you back to the same screen.

tried f5 and f8, and tried all options like startup in safe mode, everything
comes back to windows error recovery page.

as windows was pre-installed, I have no disc. Help!!

This is the option of the last resort as it comes to salvaging your data and
OS.

Turn the machine off, turn it back on and IMMEDIATELY press two keys: CTRL +
F6. If you hear a distress series of beeps (around 5/sec) keep pressing for
about 1 min. After that release F6 but keep pressing Ctrl for a while.

At this point the MS Windows Boot Console should appear and offer you
choices. Choose Boot in Safe Mode With Internet.

Now, that combination Ctrl+F6 is maker specific. It worked for my DELL
towers. Other manufacturers reportedly have other "secret" codes.

You may try Alt, Del, PgUp, PgDn instead of Ctrl. Also F6 is not cast in
concrete. You may try other function keys. Some machine may require only one
key to be pressed.

Every machine MUST have a code like this. It took me about 10 min to find
mine.

Did you get this sorted, or end up sending the computer off for repair,
as my computer is having the exact same problem?

Look at the # of posts of each person in that thread. NONE of them
use that board. So NONE of them will get an email telling them they
had a reply. And since the thread ended in February, it's unlikely
that they even remember anything about it.

You are better off:

1) quoting all of what you are replying to, or
2) starting a new thread and giving detailed info about your problem.
