Windows Error on satellite P105

I have a toshiba sattelite P105-S6014 that has suddenly failed to run.
Following message appears every time I boot up ' Windows could not
start because following file is missing or corrupt

<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file'

I have tried running the recovery cd that comes with the laptop but
everytime a recovery error message pops up. Any hel
