Windows Error creating a TCP/IP port

G

Guest

I have been attempting to install an HP printer on my home network. It has
an IP address (which I can access via a brower, so the connection is fine),
but when I try to install the printer, either using HP installer software, or
manually using XP add a printer, or even creating a new TCP/IP port for an
existing printer, windows always experiences en error and crashes (not full
crash). This happens on both my laptop and desktop (both running XP), I
have seen a few posts on other sites saying others have observed this, but no
solution to the windows problem. Any ideas for why windows has this error
everytime, or how to fix, or even a work around?? Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

I am indeed trying to create a standard TCP/IP port. None of the following
files are in the windows\system folder, they are all in the windows\system32
folder

Wsnmp32.dll, Ntprint.dll, Tcpmib.dll, Mgmtapi.dll, or Snmpapi.dll file

should I be looking for any other files? Any other ideas?

You are half way home Dorthy.

XP shipped with a debugger called ntsd.exe in system32.

we are going to dump the stack trace of the application crash file to
display the fault.

in a command window change directories to get to the mdmp file

then type
ntsd -z DRWTSN32.EXE.mdmp

this will bring you to a prompt similar to this

(1de8.2234): Access violation - code c0000005 (!!! second chance !!!)

So I try to find any of the files listed as being included in the error
report and they do not exist, either in the folder it says it should be in,
or anywhere on the hard disk?

I also searched for any .mdmp files and only found 1 from 2005 that had 0
bytes in a PCHealth folder.

Any thoughts for next thing to try? thanks

Another question,
Is there a work around, like:
1) creating a TCP/IP port manually, not using the wizard (possibly by
creating a new port type that just happens to be a TCP/IP port) if so how
would I do this ? (it asks for a printer INF)
2)re-direct an alreay existing port to the IP address (I only have an IP
address and don't have it as a network address, i.e.
nextworkplace\printername, if I need this how do I turn an IP address into a
network address)
3)any other work around ??

Thanks,

you can use prnport.vbs in system32. I don't remember if this file ships on
HOME version but it's on Pro.

prnport.vbs will create Standard TCP/IP port without UI.

Thanks Alan, I'll try this. Do I need to be in a certain directory when I do
this ?

I am assuming I would type:

prnport -a -r IP_192.168.2.4 -h 192.168.2.4

correct ? Then after this I just go into the printer preferences and the
port should be on this list of ports to choose from ?

Thanks,
Michael

You are half way home Dorthy.

XP shipped with a debugger called ntsd.exe in system32.

we are going to dump the stack trace of the application crash file to
display the fault.

in a command window change directories to get to the mdmp file

then type
ntsd -z DRWTSN32.EXE.mdmp

this will bring you to a prompt similar to this

You will need to specify the protocol type and port number if something
other than 9100 or if the protocol is LPR you need the queue name for the
LPD service.

Got a neighbor? I have not purchased a power washer yet because I can
borrow my neighbors when I need one once every couple years. I can't really
same more.

and got the following error:

You will need to specify the protocol type and port number if something
other than 9100 or if the protocol is LPR you need the queue name for the
LPD service.

Got a neighbor? I have not purchased a power washer yet because I can
borrow my neighbors when I need one once every couple years. I can't really
same more.

Can
I redirect a currnt port to an IP address? Or is there a way to get

Thanks Alan, I'll try this. Do I need to be in a certain directory when
I do
this ?

I am assuming I would type:

prnport -a -r IP_192.168.2.4 -h 192.168.2.4

correct ? Then after this I just go into the printer preferences and the
port should be on this list of ports to choose from ?

Thanks,
Michael

:

you can use prnport.vbs in system32. I don't remember if this file
ships on
HOME version but it's on Pro.

prnport.vbs will create Standard TCP/IP port without UI.

prnport /?

Another question,
Is there a work around, like:
1) creating a TCP/IP port manually, not using the wizard (possibly by
creating a new port type that just happens to be a TCP/IP port) if so
how
would I do this ? (it asks for a printer INF)
2)re-direct an alreay existing port to the IP address (I only have an
IP
address and don't have it as a network address, i.e.
nextworkplace\printername, if I need this how do I turn an IP address
into
a
network address)
3)any other work around ??

Thanks,

So I try to find any of the files listed as being included in the
error
report and they do not exist, either in the folder it says it should
be
in,
or anywhere on the hard disk?

I also searched for any .mdmp files and only found 1 from 2005 that
had 0
bytes in a PCHealth folder.

Any thoughts for next thing to try? thanks

:

You are half way home Dorthy.

XP shipped with a debugger called ntsd.exe in system32.

we are going to dump the stack trace of the application crash file
to
display the fault.

in a command window change directories to get to the mdmp file

then type
ntsd -z DRWTSN32.EXE.mdmp

this will bring you to a prompt similar to this

type k, then <enter> to dump the stack.

copy the output and send it back.

I am indeed trying to create a standard TCP/IP port. None of
the
following
files are in the windows\system folder, they are all in the
windows\system32
folder

Wsnmp32.dll, Ntprint.dll, Tcpmib.dll, Mgmtapi.dll, or
Snmpapi.dll
file

should I be looking for any other files? Any other ideas?

Verify that there are no extra versions of winsock files in
the
windows
directory. They should all be in \windows\system32

I assume you are creating a Standard TCP/IP Port not the HP
Standard
TCP/IP
Port.

I have been attempting to install an HP printer on my home
network.
It
has
an IP address (which I can access via a brower, so the
connection is
fine),
but when I try to install the printer, either using HP
installer
software,
or
manually using XP add a printer, or even creating a new
TCP/IP
port
for
an
existing printer, windows always experiences en error and
crashes
(not
full
crash). This happens on both my laptop and desktop (both
running
XP),
I
have seen a few posts on other sites saying others have
observed
this,
but
no
solution to the windows problem. Any ideas for why
windows has
this
error
everytime, or how to fix, or even a work around?? Any help
appreciated.

Alan Morris [MSFT]

Use ntsd and attach the debugger to the dmp file.

This will at least point to the failing stack and dll.

(also tried w/o the -n)

and got the following error:

the appcompat.txt has the following content; any ideas ? (If I need to
send
you the mdmp file how do I do that?) Thanks for any help!

Another question,
Is there a work around, like:
1) creating a TCP/IP port manually, not using the wizard (possibly
by
creating a new port type that just happens to be a TCP/IP port) if
so
how
would I do this ? (it asks for a printer INF)
2)re-direct an alreay existing port to the IP address (I only have
an
IP
address and don't have it as a network address, i.e.
nextworkplace\printername, if I need this how do I turn an IP
address
into
a

3)any other work around ??
