Windows Easy Transfer - program crashes during transfer

I

Ian F.

I am attempting to transfer files & settings using the Belkin Easy
Transfer cable from an XP computer to a Vista computer.

All starts well by showing that the two computers are connected. But after
finding the files and settings and providing the amount of data to be
transferred, it starts gathering information but then shows a flashing
disconnection icon in the upper right of both computers' transfer windows
and freezes.

This happens at a different place each time, but early in the procedure
(after about 10 minutes). Would anyone have any advice? I have done
everything by the book, as far as I'm aware. Many thanks.

Ian

I think I remember that the Belkin cable uses USB. That behavior is very
suggestive of a "Power Management" tab setting on the USB device properties
pages. Uncheck the option to allow the device to turn off.

It does, yes.

I have set the power management settings on the Vista computer to never
shut down. Is that what you mean or is there something else I should be
attending to?

Thanks,

Click start, and type: devmgmt.msc
Doubleclick all the USB devices for their Properties pages, and look at all
the "Power Management" tabs for checkboxes to uncheck.

Mark, would that be on the Vista computer, the XP computer or both?

Both have the setting, and there is no way to tell which is doing it.

Ok - I'll take a look at them both later and report back. Many thanks for
the input.

Tried this, Mark, and unchecked one box that was checked but to no avail.
