Windows dumping everything

S

step

Please some help. I have just installed XP Home SP3. Windows will not save
any downloads, changes to settings etc. that are made during any session.
Upon restarting windows all settings have reverted to the previous settings
and anything saved is gone. While looking in various locations to try to find
a setting to rectify it, this message would at times raise it's ugly head!
"Files that are required for windows to run properly have been replaced by
unrecognized versions. To maintain system stabilty, Windows must restore the
original versions insert your Windows XP Home SP3 now. " Tried that but it
did nothing. The more information tab is no help. Could these 2 issues be
related? Any suggestion please. Step.

Did you install XP SP3, or download and install SP3 on an existing copy
of XP? If the latter, Windows can't find the updated SP3 files. Maybe
something here will help:

Hi Elmo, Tried both solutions but no go. SFC prompted me to insert XP SP3
disc [a full sp3 disc, no download] to repair files. But they were no doubt
dumped also on restart. Same for kellys download I'm sure.. So still pulling
hair. Anymore suggestions from you or anyone??? Thanks , Step

Hi Gerry, At the moment none that I know of. I can't save a thing to set any
up.
Whilst trying to hunt out anything that may be lurking there I found these
non Microsoft ones in the in the System Configuration Utility____
DF5Serv By Faronics Corp. It's called "Deep Freeze".
ES lite Service for progra... By unknown.
Both these progs. are running. If I disable them they are both running again

Well Deep Freeze is a security product but not one I have encountered
before:
http://www.faronics.com/html/deepfreeze.asp.

http://www.faronics.com/faq/default.asp

5. How do Windows Updates get applied to a computer that has Deep Freeze
installed?

Deep Freeze must be disabled for updates to be permanently applied. This
can be performed in many ways depending on what tools are used to manage
the workstations. For Deep Freeze Standard, workstations must be Thawed
manually before installing Windows updates.
If no management tools are available, Deep Freeze Enterprise can be
configured to automatically turn off, install Windows updates, and turn
on again through the use of a Scheduled Maintenance period. If a third
party patch management tool is in use, Deep Freeze Enterprise can be
disabled through the use of a command line control that allows third
party applications to turn the protection on or off (Frozen or Thawed)
as required.
Detailed instructions on configuring Deep Freeze and managing patches,
including the use of the command line controls and the Scheduled
Maintenance feature of Deep Freeze Enterprise can be found at:
http://www.faronics.com/whitepapers/DFEnt_PatchManagement.pdf

Did you follow these instructions?

ES lite is explained here:

Hi Gerry, It looks like you've hit it for me. Am now waiting for the guy who
installed Windows and other software to come get rid of it. It's password
protected and I can't get into it. Why he put it in a personal desktop at all
defies the imagination. Thanks again and will advise of final results soon.

It will of course equally apply for every monthly update post SP3 until
Microsoft stop issuing updates or the computer cease being used.

The answer to FAQ 7 covers passwords.

You should also note that this is not the latest version of Deep Freeze.

Criminy.

Deep Freeze on a home computer - if I am reading this correctly?

Mr./Ms. Step - if I were you and you are letting somebody else help
you get your computer to play nicely, I would look elsewhere for a new
friend.

Perhaps (maybe), this person has set up your computer for you,
"frozen" it, so you can't do anything yourself and thereby force you
to come back to them to make even simple changes. Sounds like they
set it up so only they can make changes. Recurring revenue for them,
headaches and frustration for you. You will be forever stuck with
this person.

Just my .02...
