On 8/13 I was looking through the posts and saw one concerning a new update
for NVIDIA drivers - I went and updated my machine as instructed and all was
well. Now when I use the Windows Update feature it tells me there is a new
driver for NVIDIA - version 4.4.0.3. The one I installed a few days ago is
45.23 - which I am assuming is newer and according to the NVIDIA site is the
latest.

I am guessing the Windows Update site is not aware of the newer driver and
since it doesn't find 4.4.0.3 on my machine it is telling me to get it - how
far off base am I here??

TIA,

You're about spot on. Why WinUpdate thinks a 'new' (or in your case old)
nVidia driver is a 'critical update', worth bringing to your attention
(and, in my case, stuffing down the wires at me .. all 11.4 MB of it) is
a minor mystery .. at a guess, someone at MS got it wrong.

Don't download it. If you do download it, don't install it.

Windows Update usually lags behind on versions of Video drivers, because
of the time taken to put them through validation tests. And the ones
that make it through sometimes prove less than satisfactory. With a
company like nVidia or ATI I would ignore the Update version and take
the download from the maker's site which they consider their current
(not Beta) one for XP

Thanks Alex - that is what I did
