windows does not reconize cd rom driver

I have a dell dimension 3000. I am having a problem with my d drive.. it will
play a dvd and a cd fine but it won,t let me burn any music or pictures.When
i put the cursor on the d drive, it alway jumps up to the start menu.i don,t
have roxio,nero or sonic..

CD-ROM drives do not have burning abilities.
Please explain "When i put the cursor on the d drive, it alway jumps up to the
start menu." with a bit more detail.
If you don't have burning software installed, what are you planning to burn with?
