Windows device timeout

Hello,

Ocassionally I receive a windows message saying
"windows device timeout"
specified I/O operation on \Device\Harddisk3\DR3 was not
completed before timeout period expired.

I then have the option of continuing, trying again or
ignoring none of which seem to matter.

What is the cause, or how can I fix this problem.
Thanks
Mike
