Windows Desktop Search (WDS), How do I use it?

Windows XP Home SP2, Office 2007

I have Windows Desktop Search (WDS) version 06.00.5361.0000 installed.
That's what shows on the list in Add or Remove Programs. I also see
searchindexer.exe (this is part of WDS, isn't it?) as a running
process in Task Manager, and I have the WDS folder in Program Files. I
believe I have WDS because I have Office 2007 installed, and I think
Windows Desktop Search came with Office. But WDS doesn't seem to be
visible anywhere else, and I don't know how to use it. I don't have a
search box on the task bar, and I don't know how to bring one up.

So how do I use this program? How do I get to its search box?

The Tour for WDS on
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/desktopsearch/default.mspx implies
that I should have a search box on the Task Bar.

Not an Office problem.

I really don't know how I installed WDS. As I said, I assume it came
with Office 2007 (does it not?). Doesn't searchindexer.exe come with
Office 2007, and isn't searchindexer.exe part of WDS? I'm not running
Vista, just regular WinXP.

I'll try it. But what's the WDS that's already on my machine? The
version number (06.00.5361.0000) doesn't look related to v 3.

I notice that searchindexer.exe isn't in the WDS folder; It's in
C:\WINDOWS\system32. I thought searchindexer.exe was part of WDS.

I don't remember doing it. And if I did, I can't use it. I'll try to
install v 3 beta 2 now, and I won't first un-install the version that
seems to be on the machine now. We'll see what happens.

I installed WDS 3.0 beta 2 without un-installing what was on the
machine already. WDS is now working, and I have a search box on the
task bar. So far, I'm not getting results from Outlook folders, but WDS
is probably still indexing.

it takes a while to index and may not do it at all if the machine is never
idle - I had to r-click on the tray icon and tell it to index. You'll also
want to set it to index your my documents folder.
