Windows Desktop Messed up

My new Windows 2000 installation on a notebook has placed
a notepad icon over each programs correct icon. Never
seen this before, all programs run fine and there are now
viruses on the pc. Wanting my icons back not sure what
happened any help would be appreciated.
 
Try deleting the shellinconcache a hidden file in the winodws
directory. It hold all the info for the icons and overlays. If that
doesn't work, try loading tweakui from the MS powertoys. It has a
function to rebuild all the icons.
