Is Defender a necessary program in Vista? I am trimming the fat on the
start up programs and wondered if Defender is truly needed, I have a anti
virus program running..

defender is for spyware not viruses

If your antivirus is also a good antispyware then you can disable it...

but most often you need more than 1 or 2 programs to search for spyware

Necessary? I guess that's a matter of
opinion...personally I think it's a useful
tool...and Windows Defender is not a
virus scanner.

The following link explains what it is:

Also worth noting, Whether your a microsoft fan or not, Defender is actually
one of the better programs Microsoft has put out (IMO). It runs quietly in
the background and does a good job of protecting you against spyware. Many
of Microsoft's programs are often out done by third party apps, but this one
however, seems to hit the nail right on the head.

- Just my opinion :)
