When I switch on my PC, I get a banner from Windows Defender with the message
'Application failed to initialize: 0x0800106ba. Restart your computer or
search Help and Support on how to start a service manually.' I've tried
restarting and get the same message and I've tried Help and Support and got
neither. Any one got any other ideas, please

Uninstall the old version and download the new one from the link below:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Also do you have Anti-virus Installed, turn the AV OFF when you do the
installation.

Here a lot of scenarios like yours and answers and you can post there if
your issue not been resolved:

If all fail try to run the Run command: sfc /scannow and let it run.
Do you get an Error Message, try to look in the event viewer for any error
messages (X) reported in the Error log.
HTH.

For Vista Users This Works!

For Vista Users This Works!

1) Go to Control Panel
2) Select Administrative Tools.
3) Open,es and scroll down to Services.
4) You may have to have Administrative privileges atthis point, so click Yes.
5) Scroll down to Windows Defender.
6) Right click, and go to Properties.
7) In the middle of the box, change Manual Start-up to Automatic.8) Click Apply, and you are done!

Takes less than a minute to fix the very annoying problem. I tried probably 26 things before finding this cure.
