Windows Defender -- Tray Icon or Not?

P

pjpinella

I just upgraded to the new beta 2 of Windows Defender. The old anti
piracy beta had a tray icon for access. This new one appears not to
have the icon or any option to turn one on or off. Is this by design or
am I missing it somewhere? I found the tray icon useful as a way to
verify the program was running or to access the full UI easily.

By the way, there''s no mention in the help file about a tray icon.

Thanks,

By design - You'll find a new applet in Control Panel called Software
Explorers. It's from here that most of the configuration, action table
data can be accessed. Also, Defender now logs most of it's actions in
the Event Log.

Defender now starts as a Service, MsMpEng.Exe. The Software
Explorer comes from a HKLM Run Key, MSASCui.Exe.

Having looked through Software Explorer's. I have still not found if it is
possible to find a tray icon, as I would rather like there to be. Is there
anyway which I can make there be a tray icon?

Does MSASCui.exe show as a Process in Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL)? If so,
Defender's running in background.

Unlike MWAS, you will only see a Defender icon in Notification Area if
something needs your attention.

It is in the Programs menu. Right click and send to desktop. Then
you can drag it to the Quick Launch toolbar.

Can I customize this in the control panel? I can't find the .cpl file for
windows defender.
