Windows defender has encountered a User inteface problem and needs to

Windows Defender is integrated into Vista. You never uninstall WD. If you
don't want to use it, you turn it off via the last option on the options
page. You might want to provide some additional doc on the problem. Take a
look with event viewer on the system log. Look for WinDefend events. What
other anti-virus or anti-spyware programs are you running? Under what
conditions do you get this User interface problem? Does it produce a dump or
error report?

I did what Engel said and it started working fine. Then some updates came
through for defender and it started saying "Windows defender has encountered
a User inteface problem and needs to close." and my Myspace Im has stopped
working too. I cannot remove the updates, so are there anything I can do.

I'm not sure that I know exactly what you did that got it working fine last
time?

Is this machine running Windows Vista?

What happens if you go to this URL and in the right-hand column, download
and install the 32-bit latest definitions for Windows Defender?

Do they install correctly, as far as you can tell? Can you now open the
Defender UI?

I restarted my computer and pressed F8. When it can back on everything was
working fine. Then when I started my computer up today nothing wanted to
work. When I checked the windows update it udated defender and said I could
not take it off.

the only way to fix is to reinstall vista as painfull as it is

ive had the same problem and i hunted for months and the only way if you
dont have a restore point is to reinstall

disable WD so it doesn't run at all if you cannot fix its problem
Go to tools/options
Uncheck- Real Time Protection

then scroll all the way down till you see

Administrator Options
Uncheck -Use Windows Defender
then go into msconfig using -run
and ucheck it from startup

reboot the computer
