Windows Defender Need Help

Got XP home.
Windows defender is in the sys tray, with a exlamation point, and when I
open it it says..."check for new definitions"
I clicked help and went through the whole page....
I clicked and check for updates, I went to help and checked for updates but
can't find any.
It still has this exlimation point and wants to check for updates.
I even uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version but i think I already
had the latest. I got....
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1593.0
Engine Version: 1.1.2503.0
Definition Version: 1.18.2632.5

I run auto updates in control panel, how do I get defender to recognize
this, and see there are NO UPDATES...

Thank you,

Bob

CCleaner will by default delete the log file for WD.
Under the Applications tabs, find and remove the check for Windows Defender.

Forgive me. You don't use CCleaner. That's ok, I haven't had egg on my face
since breakfast.
CCleaner ( aka crap cleaner ) is a commonly used cleanup utility.

But back to your problem. It still sounds as if something on your system is
deleting the WD log.

Anybody else have an idea?

Great catch on Engel's part--and I thought Anonymous Bob was doing far
better than I would.

There's some authentication involved in the update process which gets broken
when the clock is way off, I think.

Bob, Emerson, Tom,

I am still not sure what the fix is ? I set my clock correctly back to 2
months ahead (was set for aug 8th) and everything seemed to be fine.
No certificate issue with Windows web pages
no more .NET framework errors when starting Windoes messanger
no more "need to update definations for windows defender"

What actually fixed all this ?

I am looking for WAN to get rid of it becuase I did an active x install to
get on these newsgroups but there is no WAN in my downloaded program files
folder.

WAN screwed my computer up before too...dont remeber as is was a few years
ago, but was pretty bad.

My windows xp pro is legit, but since then I always hid the WAN update when
Miscrosoft Update said I had files to download and update.

thanks.

If everything is working well, I would not go and find that update and
remove it. Can you tell us the number for it--or more description than WAN?
I'm not sure what that is.

I suspect the simple change in the time, myself. It may be that in addition
to changing the time you need to reboot for it to evidence itself--but I've
seen updates fail when the clock has been off myself, I believe--only once,
but most machines I work with are in domains and are synched--the clocks are
almost all right.
