Windows Defender Manual (Daily) Update - June 29

Donna Buenaventura

Hi Guys!

I hope you're both calm and OK. Let's not argue on daily postings as it can
be stopped (in being posted) if no one posts it :-D
I am happy to post it here and I like to follow the daily updates and it's
great to see there's cooperation from the rest of the community in feeding
new version when available.

I personally like the daily updates because AFAIK (and it was published
somewhere) daily updates is for paid customers of Live OneCare... so to see
it is available for download for free WD users... is great.
Not sure though if WD users can take advantage of pushed daily updates or
when there's available .. later on. Or if daily will only be available for
OneCare usrs. Send them feedback.. they love it:

Dear ANONYMOUS Person,
If you are are and/or have been a beta tester then clearly you should
make sure you download all patches 10 times a day to be of any use to
M$!

Really, not so sure about that.
It is people like you who make M$ products better and beta testers
should not complain so publicly about products :).

Why not? By the way, I am only using the word "complain" because you did.
I would not call it complaining myself. We even have MVPs here that
"complain".
You must know other ways to complain to M$ about its methods and
products.

Nope, don't know of any other ways. I have no direct e-mail addresses or
phone numbers.
I am, of course,
assuming that you are enjoying very much devoting your time freely to
ensure M$ remains the premier software supplier on this planet!

Well, that's not exactly why I'm devoting my time.
I really couldn't care less if MS is "premier", if by premier you mean
number one, or the biggest.
They certainly are not number one in terms of safety or service.
So what exactly are you complaining about? If you have a DSL or a
Broadband connection then downloading any files any number of times
should not be a problem.

Ah, there you have hit the crux of the matter.
I do not have DSL or Broadband :(
Downloading a full Mpas-fe takes about 17min on my modem.
This time would be in addition to the time spent updating my other
products.
I give MS quite enough download time on Patch Tuesday.
Are you complaining that Donna Buenaventura is
giving update information well before you are able to?

Nope, first it is not my place to give update information.
Tracker, Engel, and Donna do it quite well.
I have on occasion posted the Delta update links when Engel is unable.
Donna has thanked me for letting her know when the Daily has updated after
her post.
What exactly is your problem?

Well, I would guess first that it is the idea of seeing the Daily being
the
way of keeping "uptodate" which I think is your view, and I would guess
some
others. If this were the case, which I think it is not, MS needs to come
up
with a more efficient way of updating, and for notifying that updates are
available.

As a norm in this group we do not post about programs that update their
definitions on a daily basis [e.g. McAfee Antivirus, SuperAntiSpyware,
etc.]
We do post about programs that update their definition less frequently
[Spybot S&D, AdAware, WD "pushed", etc.] because people might not know
they've been updated. This is not really needed if something updates
everyday
or several times a day.

When I am at work and have a T1 connection I can download the Daily all
day
long and let Donna know if is a higher version than the one she posted. I
can't do that at home. Donna is an important member of COU [Calender of
Updates] where they do in fact post every single update that they find.
That
is the purpose of that site.

I'm just not sure I see the purpose of it here.
The Daily will Always be there, it will Always be the most "current".
I just don't see it as real "update" path for the average user.
Does that make sense?
Are you fed up of using WD?

Nope, the more protection the better :)
you won't get your MVP with attitude like that!

Not looking for a MVP, I am quite happy being a Geek w/o Portfolio :p
Donna is a MVP because she is doing a very good job without complaining!

Donna is an MVP because she is doing a very good job PERIOD!
I don't know here well enough to know how much she "complains",
Again, I'm using the world complain because you did.
and I love Donna's Avatar.
You seem to be spending more time winging as it seems from afar!

Of course I'm "winging it", I'm a geek w/o portfolio.
If I had a job doing this I'd be really good at it and wouldn't have to
wing
it :)

Why don't you come out of the shadows and share with us?
There's always room for one more familiar face.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, I'm off to church.

?:)

Geek w/o Portfolio,
or DSL,
But apparently a LOT of Patience this weekend :)

Donna would be the first to tell you that MVPs complain as much or more than
other Microsoft customers. We DO rock the boat.

I haven't seen any of her messages complaining about daily updates. DO
YOU ALSO COMPLAIN ABOUT DAILY UPDATES?

I am on record saying that I would prefer having daily updates but only
weekly updates of new engines on a particular date.

For example look for subject: "Re: The "dailys" and "Full" updates" on
or around Sun, 17 Jun 2007 21:26:21 +0100. This is GMT so your time
will be different.

I don't like to shoot the messenger when all she is doing is informing
us of new updates. There are two people's messages I always look for:
1) is Engel, who gives us details of regular automatic updates and Donna
who tells us of new full updates. I like to have a file of full update
to install it on a machine that is off-line most of the time.

i think we have sucked this matter dry and we should move on!. There
isn't anything new to contribute!

Like Bill said, we (MVPs) also have complains and feedback has been sent.
Public feedback is of course welcome by them via the link I provided and
also via this newsgroup. We just need to note that the Portal for Malware
Protection by MS is in beta stage so we might hear more when it is out of
beta? but one thing I know is for sure is that OneCare users has daily
updates too.

While we are seeing the daily updates as available, we need to inform the
community and let users know about it because there are are users who want
and don't mind in taking advantage of the daily/manual updates. (I
personally download hourly updates for my antivirus) because it's one of the
tool I use to depend main system and another system in home network. So I
see no big problem if we encourage and inform users that there are WD
daily/manual update awaiting for them to download anytime they want via the
KB article and portal especially if the update is not a beta update that can
caused "false positive" often.

IMHO, any tool that we use for real-time protection should be kept
up-to-date. If it's available, I'll grab it.

Donna,

I've come to the party late. Please forgive me for not quoting the previous
articles.
The one thing I have to contribute to the discussion that hasn't been
mentioned is that those of us who bother with the daily updates are likely
to find false positives before they get pushed out to the world. That, in
and of itself, seems worthwhile.

Thank you,
Bob Vanderveen

Hi Bob,

Since we are ahead on defs .. yes, we are likely to discover any false
positives if any and we are also likely to first receive any fix on previous
(manual or pushed) defs :)
