Windows Defender Creating Up To A Dozen System Restore Points Dail

I'm running Windows Defender Beta 2 and must say that I find it to be even
better then it's sibling Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) was.
I really life the new *much easier to use** interface.
I have a question though. Daily, Windows Defender is creating between 6 & 12
new system restore points on my XP Pro System Restore. Is this normal.

NO! Sorry to say, WD runs perfect! Only System Restore Points AFTER I've
allowed or blocked items in the firewall/ports and after updating new
definitions.I'm running a Dutch XP Home Edition, often for a week on line,
and ONLY Windows itself makes every 24 hours a SystemRestore point, WD NOT!
Anyone else having NO problems? I keep reading several users with
SystemRestore Issues! Jan vdn Eeden - the Netherlands.

This may be dependent on some checkboxes, and also specific third-party
software running. Glad you aren't seeing the issues!

This is good to hear.

Have you checked settings options to be notified about:
"Software that has not yet been classified for risks"
"Changes made to your computer by software that is allowed to run"

(bottom of real-time protection options section.)

I'm not certain on this, but I believe that one or more of these settings in
conjunction with some third-party software, results in these extra restore
points. Microsoft is aware of this issue.

hello Bill Sanderson,
Yes, I've ticked all of the boxes, WD checkes everything. When playing clips
with RealOneplayer, WD often ask my approval in changes of firewallports.
Also when installing software WD often asks my permission. After allowing or
blocking, WD makes a RestorePoint. My Pc is now running for three days in a
row, and WD does NOT make one or several Restorepoints at random! Only XP
itself makes every 24 hours a restorepoint, that is, when the computer is not
in use all of the time. It has to be given some time. All in all, I'm very
satisfied with this WD Bèta 2. Jan.

The restore points that others are complaining about are not fiction--they
are real. Steve Dodson has posted a registry change which should eliminate
the behavior. I'm not sure what is involved--I don't see them on my systems
either, but it is happening.

Steve Dodson posted this earlier:

To stop restore points from WD:

In the registry editor,

Create a "REG_DWORD" Key named "DisableRestorePoint" and set it to TRUE
under the following location in the registry.

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows Defender/Scan/

However, there's a bit more to this.

1) you must change permissions in order to accomplish this. I right-clicked
the "scan" object, and gave my username FULL permissions, and hit apply.

I then created the DWORD Value (I don't know why everyone calls these things
keys when the UI requires that you click add, new, value.

I then changed the value of the newly created value to 1, which I believe
is "True."

Then I went back to the "scan" object, and unchecked "full" permissions from
my user and hit apply.

I'll try to do some more testing to see if all is well

Near as I can tell, what I've done is the right thing. However, I'm not
seeing the problem--so I hope someone else who IS seeing these restore
points can try this out and let me know.
