Trying to figure out some (or all) of the ways that Windows can get
corrupted. One would be to turn off power to the PC before Windows has
completely shut down.

Others ?? Please list as many as you can think of.

TIA

You should do your own homework.

First, I'm not a seventh grader. I am a Staff Software Engineer, and I
work for a large defense contractor.

We are now experiencing a rash of computer failures - mainly being
attributed to Windows. In order to eliminate all the possible causes, I have
to know what they are, which is the reason I asked for help.

If you have nothing to contribute, finish this sentence yourself....

Well, now that you mention it, a Staff Software Engineer working at a Large
Defense Contractor should have a half dozen reasons ready to mind.

'We are now experienceing a rash of computer failures - mainly being
attributed to Windows.' is a level further up the causal chain that your
original post.

'In order to eliminate all the possible causes, I have to know what they
are, which is the reason I asked for help.' certainly indicates you are, if
not what 'Pop' labeled you, not what you claim to be either.

Your use of the Microsoft CDO rather than a newsreader is not a good sign
either.

To get a useful answer you must include useful information in the question.
Even if someone were to list 'five reasons Windows can get corrupted' you
have jumped over the symptoms to a question you abstracted from what you
see. Most likely incorrectly, considering your follow-up post.

If you back up and start over with the symptoms, some readers may ignore the
bad impression you made and provide useful replies.

I see I got another useful answer.

I asked a simple question, and expected a few simple answers, certainly not
the grief I'm getting.

I am by no means a technician - I don't work on computers for a living, and
don't know all of the common problems seen in a day-to-day repair shop. I
only write programs *for* Windows.

Oh, and I do have Forte Agent, but hate the interface.

There are a few ways to get windows angry with you. Then there are times
when it just wants to act up seemingly with cause. What issues are you
experiencing with these computers? Perhaps if you list several issues, I
can find a common thread and help diagnosis and solve your issues.

The list is so long it's not possible to list the causes, install software,
uninstall software, install or uninstall updates, hardware failures,
incorrect BIOS settings, power surges. Pretty much anything you can think of
to do to a PC has the possibility of causing Windows to become unstable.

Honestly ask a useful question, don't demand a simple answer, lose the
attitude, and perhaps you might get a useful answer. IF anyone is still
willing.

A big one is spyware or other malware from recreational browsing or
downloading "free" utilities and programs.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Can't help you there, but I am sorry for a couple responses you received.
The rudeness you've encountered, was both unnecessary and unproductive.

Anywho, I was led to your post because I'm trying to figure out exactly what
Windows is doing when it shuts down. I vaguely know that it's saving files
and settings to the hard drive, which makes sense. But I've heard Windows
NOT being shutting down properly can cause corruption, and I do not
understand why since they're JUST settings (to my knowledge). I've scoured
the 'net for the reason and have not found it yet. So I thought I'd try here.

I will likely post this question elsewhere... although I wonder now if one
must be having problems in order to post. I did not see that anywhere but
it's obvious from the responses you received that people expect there to be a
problem.

Good luck,

Nvnohi
