Windows continuously reboots

Here's a problem for you. After defragmenting my drive using norton's speed
disk and starting the computer the next day I recieved a "disk read error"
after attempting several reboots the message changed to "windows could not
start. The file Windows\System32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt" Press
Ctl-alt-del to restart system". I finally ran a chkdsk /r and now windows
will boot to the windows logo briefly, followed by a brief blue screen and
computer restarts and this continues endlessly. A repair install was
unsuccessful. I also built the boot.ini file using the recovery console on
my windows XP cd. That did'nt work. Help anyone

Thank you, I tried all those. It seems that it solved the hal.dll file
problem but now i continuously reboot getting only as far as the windows logo
followed by a brief blue screen and the comupter restarts in the same loop.
Any Ideas?

Backup, Re-partition, Format, Clean install. would be my initial suggestion.

you may be able to disable "automatically restart" so you can get the Error
codes from the Blue screen stop message to continue troubleshooting.

can I repartition my drive and NOT loose my data. I guess I am going for the
repair if possible. I should say that I was able to get repair install to
work once. My computer booted normally but had to reinstall all updates
after SP1. It did this automatically and then it installed SP2. After it
rebooted to the "windows could not start missing or corrupt hal.dll" error
message. I then ran chkdsk /r which produced the weird reboot loop which
includes a brief blue screen. Then I tried fixboot, then I replaced
kernel.dll. Still has reboot loop. Any suggestions.
