windows can't start up, missing hal.dll file

Hi,
My windows XP Home edition can't start up at all, not even
in 'safe' mode. Error msg says "<windows root>\system32
\hal.dll" is missing or corrupt, pls reinstall.

Can anyone advise on where i can get this file, or how to
fix my laptop? Wld also really appreciate advise on how i
can recover/backup my data before fixing the problem.

The answer is in your Windows XP reinstallation CD. You
just boot from that CD and run Recovery Console feature
in it. It will give you a prompt from the recovery
console to type in something. Just type in: "chkdsk /r".
This is for repairing the damaged or corrupt system files
in your operating system. after chkdsk type "exit" to
restart your computer.
