Windows cannot load locally stored profile.

Hi everyone :) Last night upon restarting my comp. The dialog box "windows
cannot load locally stored profile...." pops up. Upon reaching the desktop
most everything is gone( a few but not all icons, desktop image) and all of
my settings are gone. including IE7, realplayer, outlook express etc. I've
checked for restore points but they are gone as well. I've tried restarting
but everytime I do all settings are gone again. It's almost like the computer
thinks that it has started for the first time, and will not save any settings
on shutdown. Is this a hard drive failure???? If anyone has any advice, or
diagnostics that I could run your help is greatly welcomed.

thanks

Hi SWAS,

Your user profile may be corrupted and Windows is logging in under a
temporary, generic profile that would not contain any of your settings.
Follow the instructions in this MSKB article in order to create a new user
account and copy the data from the old account into the new one:

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile

Hi Patti :) thank you very much for the reply and the link, Your right the
file is corrupted Whenever I tried to copy the file: Ntuser.dat I recieved a
disk error. I did run chkdsk, but it showed all clear. I have started a new
user profile, and I'm currently changing all the settings. Do you think this
will happen again??? Again thankyou for your help

You're very welcome for the reply and the link :)

Do I think it will happen again? Best I can say is that I hope not, but it
might. I have never experienced a corrupted user profile on my computers,
whereas one of my coworkers mentioned to me that his user profile gets
corrupted on a fairly regular basis.

Hi patti :) I guess the main thing that I'm worried about is if this might be
a problem with the hard disk. From what I can tell all of my programs and
files are still here (though scattered all over the place LOL) Everything
else seems to work okay, could you recommend another way to check the hard
disk other than chkdsk???

thanks again :)

Hello again, SWAS :)

Check the hard drive manufacturer's website for downloadable
utilities....you should be able to find a utility that will check the
integrity of the disk.

Hi, this exact same thing has has happened to me -- but in addition, I cannot
download any fixes or updates, cannot uninstall any programs, Explorer n0
longer keeps history of Web pages visited, and won't allow me access to
installed programs like Acrobat. What is wrong?
This all started the day after I installed Norton 360. I spent 4 hours on
the chat line with their analysts and no one was ever able to figure out what
was wrong.

I tiried repairing via the Operating System CD that came with my conmputer,
but I cannot remember my administrators password, so I'm unable to use it.
Please help!!!
