First, since notepad can be damaged by a virus, what does a scan with a
current antivirus program (meaning a version not earlier than 2002 and
using updated virus definitions) show? If you know your computer is
clean:
1) See if you have a copy of Notepad.exe in C:\Windows\System32 or C
\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386 and if so, copy the file to C:\Windows;
or
2) Expand a copy of notepad.exe to C:\Windows\System32 by doing the
following:
Have the XP install CD in the CDROM drive. Go to Start>Run and type
"cmd" without the quotes, Enter. In the command prompt window, type:
expand X:\i386\notepad.ex_ c:\Windows\System32 \notepad.exe (where you
will replace the X with the actual drive letter designation for your
CDROM drive) Then press Enter.
3)Exit the command prompt window by typing "exit", then press Enter.

rwbenjamin said:I now have a file that looks just like notepad in the windows\system
32
folder but it has been changed to 'notpad'
Its even the same file size as notepad. I scanned it with an updated
virus checker and its clean. I copy and pasted 'notepad' from my
windows folder into this folder and now my shortuct etc finds
notepad
fine.
My question is, should I delete this file called 'notpad' or just
leave
it alone ?
And what could have changed notepads name ?
