Windows cannot find '/dlist

A clients laptop (XPHome, SP2) starts up to the desktop, but then everything
disappears from the desktop except the wallpaper, including the taskbar. I
can start taskmanager and run a new desktop task. Desktop icons and taskbar
reappear, but so does an error message: Windows cannot find '/dlist, :0:400,
C:\Documents'. A search on this message in this newsgroup turns up nothing.
A Google search turns up little, mostly to do with client machines on
networks/domains. What does this error message mean? I've disabled all
startup programs in msconfig. I am able to open C:\Documents and Settings,
which shows folders for Owner, All Users and Administrator. That's as far as
I can get before the cycle starts over. Switching to safe mode does not
good; same thing. How do I fix this?

Thanx,
Ripper
