"Windows cannot find 'copy'.

Seeing this issue pop up all over after a recent critical
update for XP Home users.

Happens after clcicking logo icon, get a failure and a
dialogue box appears telling you (header) Copy

"Windows cannot find 'copy' and so on...click OK and your
get your desktop.....

Be on the lookout for the error...did a search in google
and got 4 pages of hits.

I get this message as well. Thought it had something to
do with my user setup 'cause I get when I first log on.
Looked at the registry that was suggested in the reply
from Chris but all is OK there. I'll keep looking for an

The latest information about this error indicates a possible infection
by the SirCam virus. Scan with a current (post-2002 version using
updated definitions) antivirus, preferrably in Safe Mode.

It just started happening this week for me too. I scanned and
scrubbed for sircam, but I had no infection and the message came up
again. I am not sure about the correlation between recent windows
updates and the error message, because it comes up on my laptop
running XP Pro but not my desktop running XP Pro.

If someone can figure this out, I'll buy them a Coke.

FYI: SirCam does not seem like the case... SirCam puts a key in the
registry. This key does not exist in my case...

The W32.Sircam.Worm@mm worm virus can cause this issue. The W32/Sircam
virus spreads itself through e-mail messages or unprotected network
file shares and can reveal or delete information on your computer. To
verify that your computer is infected with this type of virus:
Restart your computer, press F8 at the Windows XP Startup menu, and
then select Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
At the command prompt, type regedit, and press ENTER.
If the registry key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

is set to
C:\recycled\sirc32.exe "%1" %*

your computer is infected with the W32/SirCam worm virus.

NOTE: If this registry setting is anything other than
"%1" %*

your computer may be infected with a different virus.

I had the same and was able to fix it:

1. Open Regedit by going to Start>>Run and then typing regedit.

2. Then do a find for "winshow" When any key is found, delete it by
pressing the delete key. Be sure to hit the F3 (Find Next) key after
each. There are about 10 or so that need to be find. Regedit will say
"Finished Searching" when complete.

3. Repeat the same step above, but this time search for "winlink"

4. After that is done, close regedit.

5. You will then have to search for the the .dll files stored on the
harddrive. Go to search for files at c: Then search for "winshow" and
"winlink" Delete any files that you find. (Im my case I did not find
any files named winlink)

6. Restart the computer

Everything should be good after that.

Wow, Matt! That was fantastic troubleshooting! There have been lots of
posts about this lately and no one really knew what was causing the
problem. One of the MS employees who posts here thought it was SirCam,
but you apparently have found the answer. Thanks for posting it so we
can pass the help around.

I had this same problem - I would get a Cannot find 'copy' message on
startup, and my IE would take about 40 seconds to open, whereas it had
previously taken about one second typically. I followed the
instructions about removing WinShow on the Symantec site listed in
this thread, and my computer works perfectly agian. I had downloaded
several video editing demos this week too, so that must have done me
in. Thanks people!!!
