Windows Cannot Find "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe"...

Chris

Hello,

We are working on a customers machine, and totally ran out of ideas how to
fix this problem. Originally internet explorer was working. The machine was
infected badly with adware / spyware and malware as well as a virus. The
virus did unhook .exe files but we have repaired that with the tool, so all
other exe files now work... other than iexplore.exe.

We get the error (when you click a shortcut, or the actual exe files)
"Windows cannot find 'c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe'. Make
sure you typed the name correctly, and try again. To search for a file,
click the start button, and then click search."

Now this is made a little bit complicated by the fact that the machine is in
Chinese, and I cant speak it at all, so I am navigating the machine purely
from memory.

Now the pc is now clear of adware and spyware. Hijack this logs are clear,
and spyware sweeps with various programs comes up clean.

If you make a copy of iexplore.exe and call it iexplore2.exe, it runs fine.
It only doesn't work when its called iexplore.exe. I have search the
registry and compared it to a working machine and it seems fine.

The only suspicious thing is, that you still cant change the home page, even
manually in the registry, by the time you've changed it, pressed ok, its
changed back to its original value "about:blank".

we have run a system file check, and that's okay. we have installed service
pack 2, no difference. Ran all updates etc.

Checked for running processes, all are normal. It performs the same way in
safe mode. Tried creating a new user and still no luck.
The error message comes up so quick, its like it hasn't even thought about
trying to run.

Does anyone have any idea's at all? we would just repair the xp install, but
the customer is from china, and only over here for a while, and has left
their Chinese xp disc at home.

Any clues would be so appreciated.

Thanks.

Download AboutBuster 5.0
http://www.malwarebytes.biz/AboutBuster5.zip

Make sure this program is run in safe mode.

1) Unzip all files to a folder.
2) Start AboutBuster 5.0 and press Update to make sure you have the latest
reference file version
3) Hit BEGIN REMOVAL. Allow the program to run.
4) AboutBuster will finish and open a new page. Follow the instructions for
protection on that page.
5) Shut down AboutBuster. A log should have been created. *IF ASKED FOR*,
please post that log on the forum.

Resetting your homepage
1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Go into the tools tab and press INTERNET OPTIONS.
3) In the text box on the Home page frame type in your preferred address and
hit apply at the verybottom.

Your Set!

No files found unfortunatly. :(

Anyone have any more ideas?

Anyway of doing a full proper reinstall of IE6, one where it does the
registry keys as well etc?

C

Chris

already have done that last week.
it doesnt make it do it properly though, it just does a quick install,
doesnt touch the registry or anything.
Not as thorough as a proper installation, you can tell that by the speed it
does it.

Thanks for your suggestions though.

Anymore?

Thanks in advance.

You can try this to Reinstall Internet Explorer...

To Reinstall IE6:
1) Insert the Win XP CD

2) Open Start | Run and type or paste:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

Press ENTER

I have been having trouble with IE too so I tried your method.

It insisted on having the service pack 2 in the cd drive but then
couldn't find the iexpress.exe folder it wanted. I did find it
on my original full install xp pro disk and it accepted that.
Then it insisted that iedw.exe was on the SP2 disk. It isn't on
it or on the original xp disk or on my HD. I finally had to
cancel out. I know that some files won't show even with hidden
clicked to show but if it is there, surely your own routines
could find them.

Disappointed,

Glenn

Hi,

Have tried this, still doesn't seem to go towards the registry, but it
didn't fix the problem.

Since then I have also managed to source an XP Chinese installation disk,
ran a repair. Still no luck.
I was convinced that a repair would fix it, so even more stuck now.

Glenn,

iexpress.exe = IExpress Wizard
[[IExpress is a technology designed to simplify creation of a setup program.
Using the step-by-step IExpress Wizard, you can create self-extracting files
that automatically run the setup program contained inside. The setup program
can be an .inf file or an executable program. IExpress technology
automatically removes the setup files after installation, saving the user
time and frustration. ]]

iexpress.exe is found here on my machine...
C:\WINDOWS\system32
and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

IEXPRESS.EX_ is the compressed version of iexpress.exe and it's on the XP CD
in the I386 folder.
---

iedw.exe = IE Crash Detection it's part of Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack
2. It is probably listed as iedw.ex_ I don't have SP2, so I don't know for
sure.

Compressed files and the underscore.

[[Installation archives often contain files with extensions ending in the
underscore. These files are compressed versions of their uncompressed
versions and the first two characters in the extension are the same as the
extension in the uncompressed file. For example, .EX_ would likely expand to
..EXE or .SY_ to .SYS, and so on.]]

compressed files from distribution disks.]]

was some unknown adware, the latest spy sweeper (version 4) now detects it,
and returns two registry keys back to thier correct values.
