Hello,
We are working on a customers machine, and totally ran out of ideas how to
fix this problem. Originally internet explorer was working. The machine was
infected badly with adware / spyware and malware as well as a virus. The
virus did unhook .exe files but we have repaired that with the tool, so all
other exe files now work... other than iexplore.exe.
We get the error (when you click a shortcut, or the actual exe files)
"Windows cannot find 'c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe'. Make
sure you typed the name correctly, and try again. To search for a file,
click the start button, and then click search."
Now this is made a little bit complicated by the fact that the machine is in
Chinese, and I cant speak it at all, so I am navigating the machine purely
from memory.
Now the pc is now clear of adware and spyware. Hijack this logs are clear,
and spyware sweeps with various programs comes up clean.
If you make a copy of iexplore.exe and call it iexplore2.exe, it runs fine.
It only doesn't work when its called iexplore.exe. I have search the
registry and compared it to a working machine and it seems fine.
The only suspicious thing is, that you still cant change the home page, even
manually in the registry, by the time you've changed it, pressed ok, its
changed back to its original value "about:blank".
we have run a system file check, and that's okay. we have installed service
pack 2, no difference. Ran all updates etc.
Checked for running processes, all are normal. It performs the same way in
safe mode. Tried creating a new user and still no luck.
The error message comes up so quick, its like it hasn't even thought about
trying to run.
Does anyone have any idea's at all? we would just repair the xp install, but
the customer is from china, and only over here for a while, and has left
their Chinese xp disc at home.
Any clues would be so appreciated.
Thanks.
