Windows Automatic Update

I'm using XP Home SP1, with Automatic Updates recently turned on.
How often does that program check for updates? Every 5 minutes, every 4
hours, once a day...?

Only you can tell us. Right Click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click on the Automatic Update Tab and it will tell you.
 
All I can say is that I have the "notify me before downloading any
updates" option selected. However, that doesn't say how often the Updates
program will "phone home" to Microsoft looking for critical files/patches.
 
I didn't phrase that last sentence very well. I'm curious to know
how often the Windows Update program will scan my computer looking for
necessary updates.
 
It checks every 24 hours for any new updates after the Internet connection
is established.
