Windows Automatic Update error

I've been trying to update Windows but Automatic Updates comes back with
error message <<Error number: 0x80248013 The website has encountered a
problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options
provided below might help you solve the problem.>>

Has anyone else received this error message?
Has anyone else successfully downloaded and installed the latest security
patches today?

A few symptoms like yours are being seen. Microsoft issued an advisory.

I have now been able to download the latest patches. It would seem that
either there was a problem with the Microsoft server or it was inundated
with traffic. It makes me question the reliability of the Microsoft update
service if Microsoft itself is having a problem keeping up with demand.

It has been commented that MS <should issue as and when they have a critical

I made a similar comment some time ago. It is quite logical to argue that,
on practical and moral grounds, if there is a known 'weakness' with a remedy
the patch should be made available immediately. The response was something
along the lines that this would require network managers to make several
updates to every computer on the network every month instead of just once a
month - and that they would probably still do it once a month. There was
also something along the lines that issuing a patch 'as-and-when' would make
spyware and virus writers more aware as to what may be vulnerable until
network managers got around to effecting patches.

There is a ring of truth in these arguments and, if it is truly a problem
for network managers, I can sympathise. However, it would seem that MS is
heavily biased to easing the life of network managers. My view is that
patches should be made available as soon as available and that it is then up
to users to install them immediately or not.
