Windows Audio Services will not start

My audio stopped functioning. When I did troubleshooting including thorough
uninstall, reboot and reinstall of audio driver (SigmaTel) I found that
trying to start Windows Audio Endpoint Builder Service produced 'Error
0x80070003: The system cannot find the path specified.' & Windows Audio
Service produced 'Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to
start.'

I have Windows Vista Ultimate and am running the 32-bit version on a Dell
XPS400 with a 3.2 Ghz Pentium D (940) and 4 GB RAM.

Could my new CounterSpy (anti-spyware) have removed something essential?

Any solution would be very much appreciated.

Try running SFC /SCANNOW. This restores missing system files.

Result of scan - "Windows Resurce Protection did not find any integrity
violations."

Restore made many changes but did not fix the problem. I lost many desktop
items which is anything but helpful. Restore is a shotgun approach which, I
feel, should be reserved for system failures.

"C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalSystemNetworkRestricted" is the
path that Windows Audio Endpoint Builder says it cannot find. Can you tell
me how to restore just that? Is it something that can be extracted from the
installation DVD? I have the Vista Ultimate Upgrade disk that I bought from
Best Buy.

svchost.exe would be present in the system, as most other services need this file. Check if the file audiosrv.dll is present in your system.

I tried that but when I try to open it using regedit (which is the only
program option) it wants to change the registry. Is there a way to just view
the exported key?

Result of scan - "Windows Resurce Protection did not find any integrity
violations."

Restore made many changes but did not fix the problem. I lost many desktop
items which is anything but helpful. Restore is a shotgun approach which, I
feel, should be reserved for system failures.

"C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalSystemNetworkRestricted" is the
path that Windows Audio Endpoint Builder says it cannot find. Can you tell
me how to restore just that? Is it something that can be extracted from the
installation DVD? I have the Vista Ultimate Upgrade disk that I bought from
Best Buy.

I tried that but when I try to open it using regedit (which is the only
program option) it wants to change the registry. Is there a way to just view
the exported key?

The registry keys match. I deselected the spyware protection from the
startup list and rebooted after shutting down, unplugging and draining the
reserve power.

What is 'Process Monitor' and how do I use it? I looked it up in 'Help &
Support' but there was nothing with that name. Perhaps Windows calls it
something else?

Again, I thank you for staying with this as I still cannot start the audio
services.

By using filters. Check Process Monitor help file to learn about the filtering options. You may have to include "svchost.exe" and "Explorer.exe" in the filters, and see what happens under the hood when starting the AudioEndpointBuilder service.

I could not find Process Monitor help. I did fix the problem by uninstalling
my graphics (ATI) drivers, SigmaTel drivers and Microsoft webcam (VX6000)
drivers and reinstalling all but the last. The driver file for the Microsoft
webcam is ridiculously huge (60+ MB) and has caused a large array of problems.

Do you know of a small driver that will run this device?

I am also having the same problem with my audio services. I went
through the thread and completed all suggested steps, nothing has
worked. I compared my REG file to the one posted and it matches
exactly. How would I use the Process Monitor to check the
AudioEndpointBuilder service? What other actions could be taken to fix
this problem?

Thanks for the update, Norman. As for the VX6000 driver, please check if the "microsoft.public.mshardware.product" group for the solution.

I could not find Process Monitor help. I did fix the problem by uninstalling
my graphics (ATI) drivers, SigmaTel drivers and Microsoft webcam (VX6000)
drivers and reinstalling all but the last. The driver file for the Microsoft
webcam is ridiculously huge (60+ MB) and has caused a large array of problems.

Do you know of a small driver that will run this device?

By using filters. Check Process Monitor help file to learn about the filtering options. You may have to include "svchost.exe" and "Explorer.exe" in the filters, and see what happens under the hood when starting the AudioEndpointBuilder service.

Goto services start windows audio service. before that start "Windows Audio
Endpoint Builder" service. Windows service is dependent in "Windows Audio
Endpoint Builder"

If that does not work, try reinstalling your Sound driver.

Boot from your Windows
Vista DVD, select the System Repair Option > on the setup screen, select
'Repair Computer > Select your installation of Windows > select Startup
Repair option and follow instructions.
