Hello,

I am trying to back up my windows address book but the
import and the export options under the file menu of
address book are grayed out. What could be causing this,
and how do I fix it. Thanks very much.

It may be that you have insufficient privilege for this
operation. In most cases you can do this:

You may have to enable the viewing of hidden files before
trying the technique below. Go to My Computer, Tools (on
the menu) and go to Folder Options. Click the View tab
and turn OFF (uncheck) Hide Extensions for Known File
Types and turn ON (check) Show Hidden Files and Folders.

1) Search for *.wab. (Start, Search, For Files & Folders)
The asterisk is a wildcard, there should be only one file
with the .wab (Windows Address Book) extension, it's
usually kept in C:\Documents and
Settings\YourUsername\Application Data\Microsoft\Address
Book (substitute your username in the appropriate place).

2) Copy it to a floppy disk or a flash drive or something.

Good Luck !

Try this: Instead of trying to backup the .wab file: In the main window of Outlook
Express click the File menu, click Export/Address Book, select Text File (Comma Separated
Values), then click the Export button, and follow the rest of the wizard. Backing up in
the .csv format is preferable, because not only can the resulting file be imported to
Outlook Express, but other email clients, and database programs like Excel.

Is MS Outlook (or MS Office) also installed?

Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\WAB
\WAB4

If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook and is its value set
to 1 (one)?

If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero), Address Book should be available to you and
all should be well. (If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and
don't alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.

Hello,

My Address Book is configured to share contacts with
outlook. This being the case, where would I find the
file containing the contacts and what would it be named?
I don't necessarily want to change the configuration, but
I would like to back up the file. Thanks.

OL Contacts are stored in either a PAB file or a PST file.

This was exactly the info that I needed. Thank you very
much!
