Dear all,
I have bought a HP Pavilion zv5000 with Windows XP Home Edition (Italian)
installed on it. I have got Genuine windows CD with it too.
Now I have reinstalled my system. Means I have formatted my machine's hard
disk and reinstalled the Windows XP Home Edition with the same Genune CD
which I got with my Notebook.
I cannot understand Italian but I am still using that windows because it is
legel copy and I dont want to spend more money to buy a new English version.
When I installed Windows, setup did not ask me to give CD Key. After
installation I am not getting any message for product activation.
Can someone help me why is that?

Many companies have a special OEM version of XP installed on the drive.
This is locked to the bios - so effectively the key is in the bios and each
time you reformat it will know the key and you do not have to enter it
again. As far as I know the only time you would need your product key is if
you flash the bios with a new version, so make sure you keep the product key
in a safe place. Although it should be on a sticker on the underside of the
laptop.

There was no legel copy running on this Notebook when I flashed the BIOS.
After flashing BIOS I switchesd to the Genuine Windows which I want to use
forever.
But initially Genuine Windows was installed but the BIOS version was also
old. But illegel copy was installed on the Notebook when I flashed the BIOS
into newer version.
I need to stay on the legel Genuine Windows now. Does it matter if I dont
care about Activation of the product because it is not asking to activate
your product.

The OEM CD has all the info for the install in the "winnt.sif" file.

Sorry I got confused, I thought you meant the XP was the one you got with
the HP Pavilion laptop, not that you had purchased it seperately.
Unsure now as to why you did not have to enter product key. Are you sure
you bought a legal windows and possibly not a fake version? Did you get a
certificate of authenticity with it? (although they can be faked too). Of
course one way of knowing whether it is a legal copy or not is to do a
windows update. There is a new update which will tell you if your copy of
windows is not actually genuine. Download the updates and when you reboot it
will tell you your windows is illegal. Although if you do not understand
Italian you probably would not understand the message.
